Dubbo Athletics Club will host the event, which is expected to attract at least 1000 competitors ranging in age from seven to 17.
The event will be held on March 5 and 6, just two months after the club hosts its annual new year's carnival and a month after the regional championships are also held at the venue.
Dubbo Athletics Club president David Williams said the city's central location meant the event could be one of the biggest in terms of participation.
"The talk is around 1000 competitors but because we are in the middle of a lot of places people might be more inclined to come here to participate," Williams said.
"I know that this year it was held in Sydney but we only had one child go and compete. There's every chance we could have 100 next year and it's more likely kids from the Western Plains clubs will be able to compete because their travel won't be as long.
"We'll probably lose some from areas like Sydney because they don't want to travel, but if that gets picked up by people from other areas that number could get to 1200, which is massive for our club and also for the city."
"A lot of parents will come, the children could have siblings as well, even grandparents who want to come and watch."
Dubbo mayor Mathew Dickerson has also welcomed the announcement.
"This is fantastic news for the Dubbo athletics community," Dickerson said.
"The State Multi-Event is a unique program where athletes participate in all of the events on offer for their particular age group. The program is such that events are scheduled over both competition days.
"Close to 1000 competitors are expected with age groups from under 7 to under 17 so this event will bring a real influx of families to Dubbo for the competition.
"If 1,500 people spent two nights in Dubbo for this event the value to the local economy from their visit would be in the order of $396,000."
Meanwhile, Dubbo City Council recreation planning and programs manager Tracey Whillock said Barden Park is proving to be a venue that is attracting significant events in athletics as well as other sports.
"Barden Park is proving to be a very versatile, multi-use venue which is attracting a range of sports and events throughout the year," Ms Whillock said.
"Last weekend the venue hosted the interclub rugby league trial between Dubbo CYMS/St Johns Juniors and Kurri Kurri, with teams from under 6 through to senior grades.
"Future events scheduled throughout the year include a cinema under the stars for Youth Week in April and this year's Relay for Life.
"There are also opportunities to host soccer matches that are being investigated, further illustrating the multiple use of Barden Park."
