► Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says she is "very relieved" Cyclone Nathan crossed further north than expected. There are no significant reports of damage in the wake of the cyclone making landfall on Friday morning, according to police. And Ms Palaszczuk confirmed there were no reports of injuries.
►Cyclone Nathan category 3, moving inland south of Cape Melville and weakening. While the cyclone remains near the coast, a storm tide is expected between Coen and Cooktown.
Large waves may produce minor flooding along the foreshore on the high tide. People living in areas likely to be affected by this flooding have been advised to take measures to protect their property as much as possible and be prepared to help their neighbours.
Heavy rainfall, which may lead to flash flooding, is occurring about the coast and adjacent inland between Coen and Cape Tribulation, and will extend west across Cape York Peninsula with the passage of the cyclone today.
7:00 am (Qld Time) Queensland Police report - Following #TCNathan there is minimal structural damage in Cooktown and no reported injuries. The road to Cooktown Airport is also open.Cape Tribulation sees roads from Cow Bay to the Daintree Ferry all open and Cape Tribulation school buses are operating. 6:45 (Qld time) Ergon Energy spokesman John Fowler said crews would begin working to restore power and assess damage as soon as it was safe to do. Power is out north of Cooktown
6:30am: (Qld time) Cyclone Nathan is expected to ease to a Category 1 and a tropical low by 5pm today. It’s influence is diminishing as it moves west. Heavy rain is settling in across the region and Emergency Services will shift their efforts to the possible flooding, especially with the 9am tide.
6:10am (Qld time) Emergency services waiting for dawn before they go out into communities to assess damage.
6:05am: (Qld time) TC Cyclone Nathan has weakened to category 3 as it begins to move inland.
6am: (Qld time) - TC Nathan crossed in Cape York area avoiding populated areas.
5:30am: Severe tropical cyclone Nathan made landfall at approximately 4am between Cape Melville and Cape Flattery on the far northeast Queensland coast as a category 4 cyclone. It has since begun to move inland and weakened slightly to a category 3 cyclone. The cyclone is expected to continue its westward movement inland this morning while weakening further.
5am: Severe Tropical Cyclone Nathan crossed land as a category 4 cyclone between Cape Melville and Cape Flattery on the northeast Queensland coast around 4am (Qld time) on Friday.
►There are no reports of damage as authorities wait for daybreak.
The cyclone is expected to continue its westward movement inland this morning while weakening.
There is a cyclone warning between Lockhart River to Cape Tribulation, extending inland to areas including Laura and Palmerville.
The category 4, cyclone has sustained winds near the centre of 165 kilometres per hour with wind gusts to 230 kilometres per hour. at 5am it was estimated to be 60 kilometres west northwest of Cape Flattery and 100 kilometres north northwest of Cooktown, travelling at 18km/h.
Destructive winds with gusts to 150 km/h, are currently affecting coastal and island areas between Cape Melville and Cooktown, and will extend west towards Coen and adjacent inland areas later this morning.
Gales with gusts to 120 km/h, extend out to approximately 130 km from the centre of the cyclone, and are now occurring about coastal areas between Coen and Cape Tribulation. These winds will extend to inland areas including Laura and Palmerville, and north to Lockhart River, later this morning.
Coastal residents between Cape Melville and Cooktown are specifically warned of the dangerous storm tide that could occur as the cyclone crosses the coast.
The sea is likely to rise steadily up to a level well above the normal tide, with damaging waves and flooding of some low-lying areas, which could also extend some way inland.
People living in areas likely to be affected by this flooding should take measures to protect their property as much as possible and be prepared to follow instructions regarding evacuation of the area if advised to do so by the authorities
Elsewhere in the warning zone, water levels on the high tide could just exceed the highest tide of the year on Friday, with large waves possibly producing minor flooding along the foreshore.
