Warning signs that display the speed limit and greater distances between signs and cameras so that motorists have a better chance of safely checking their speed are among a suite of measures proposed by the National Roads & Motorists Association to make mobile speed cameras fairer.

The NRMA has released its four-point plan on mobile speed cameras as new data shows almost 41,000 motorists have been fined by the cameras so far this financial year - up from almost 26,500 in 2013/14.
Other ideas from the NRMA?include higher visibility markings on mobile camera cars and regular safety audits of operation sites.
and ensure the signs are consistent with fixed speed camera warning signs.
Leave more room between the A-frame warning signs and the camera vehicle to give motorists a fairer chance of checking their speed limit safely. Currently, the signs are displayed 250 metres and 50 metres before the vehicle and 50 metres after the vehicle, regardless of the speed limit. On roads with higher speed limits it is much harder for motorists to check their speed limit safely
Mark mobile speed camera vehicles with the same high-visibility markings used by Police highway patrols; and
Conduct safety audits at the sites where mobile speed cameras operate, in the same way that audits are conducted at fixed speed camera sites. This will ensure greater transparency and enable the Government to adopt infrastructure solutions to those locations where a high number of motorists are being fined.
NRMA President Kyle Loades said these common-sense measures would cost almost nothing but ensure greater transparency and reinforce the message that the cameras are about safety, not revenue.
"Mobile speed cameras play an important role as one of a suite of measures to make our roads safer - but that's not to say we can't make them fairer and more transparent," Mr Loades said.
"The number of cameras active and their hours of operation have increased significantly this year so now is the perfect time to improve the way they operate.
