In what is shaping as a super race and the strongest field yet assembled in the Country Championship Series, Voodoo Lad is likely to go to the post as race favourite, despite being runner-up at his last two starts.
Trainers from the Dubbo region will being paying close attention to this race, with their own heat at Dubbo Turf Club on March 22, but today is the perfect chance to see some of the Championship favourites in action.
Northam, a fine horseman, believes he has the three-year-old ready to peak at the right moment.
"The horse is super. I'm very happy with him," Northam said. "We've aimed towards this race for months. Fitness-wise it won't be an issue.
"He's been a bit behind the eight ball but he's worked along nicely towards the race since Scone. He's had a bit of swimming and a couple of nice gallops to get him ready.
"I'm more than happy with his progress."
Voodoo Lad showed ability right from day one. Bred by Scone Race Club president Noel Leckie, a part-owner, the son of I Am Invincible out of the Gilded Time mare O'Fortuna, Voodoo Lad has never finished worse than second in six starts, recording three wins.
Voodoo Lad won the Scone Challenge in May last year as a two-year-old, underpinning his ability, and was spelled to get ready for the Championships.
He resumed from a 210-day break to record a win over 1100m at Scone on December 12 then had another 55-day break.
The gelding ran second at Wyong on February 2 and followed that up with another second, this time to Championship rival Artlee at Scone.
Voodoo Lad meets Artlee much better at the weights today.
"He carried 60 kilos and was a bit underdone going in second up after a 55-day break without a trial," Northam said. "He did pull a bit which is unusual for him but he got very wound up on his home track. He just fired up.
"With a trip away and third up at Tamworth it will be a different story."
Voodoo Lad has drawn barrier 10 while the Northam-trained Husswick will jump from barrier 18.
