St John's and their senior side Dubbo CYMS will take on the Kurri Kurri Bulldogs later this month during a day in which matches will be played from under 6s all the way through to first grade.

Wilson, who has a long involvement with the junior side of the game, said it was a fantastic opportunity for players of all ages and believed the fun atmosphere generated by days like this and bonds between different country areas could only be good for the game.

"I think it's what's got to happen in the future, especially in the juniors. Days like this and carnivals get people into other areas and the kids love it, it's better for footy and better for everything," he said.

"We've got to jump at stuff like this. A lot of people sit back and whinge about how bush footy struggles in some areas but it's time for us to start moving forward."

The gala day will be played at Barden Park and with Kurri Kurri coming from the powerhouse Newcastle area, Wilson said it would be the perfect way for the young St John's players to kick off their season.

"It's fantastic to play against teams from another area and see how we compare," he said.

"They're from a bigger area and bigger footy environment so it's going to be a really good challenge.

"It's the best way to improve, playing against different kids and different groups and the day is not all about winning and losing. We want to create a family and fun environment."

Kurri Kurri are expected to bring more than 600 people to Dubbo, reinforcing Wilson's belief that a strong relationship is being formed between the two clubs.

While the trials are pre-season matches with a focus on fun rather than results, Wilson admitted there was a lot of motivation for young players.

Representative teams are always chosen early in the season and former Balmain and North Sydney player Wilson knows trial form is always taken into account.

"It's especially good for our 13s, 14s and 15s to get some game time in because I think they have representative trials the next day and the next week," he said.

"The more footy the better for those kids and it will help them go on to make representative teams."

Wilson will be coaching the Western Rams under-16s side in 2015 so he knows better than most how much of an impact players can make early in the season.

He and his fellow Western coaches are already planning for the season ahead and the new coach admits the excitement is already building.

"We're watching all the time and looking out to find that kid we need," he said.

"We're really looking forward to it all because there's some really good kids coming through so can't wait to get a squad together."

St John's and CYMS meet Kurri Kurri at Barden Park on March 28.
