DUBBO is on track to get its first connections to the National Broadband Network to existing houses by the middle of 2015, Mayor Mathew Dickerson told council on Monday night.

While NBN Co is remaining non-committal on when connections will be made, councillor Dickerson said a recent meeting with the NBN Co's Darren Rudd indicated to him that plans are still on track.
"At this stage the rollout hasn't changed. By July we should have fibre connections in Eastridge, that will be the first Fibre Serving Area Module (FSAM) connected. There are six FSAMS that serve Dubbo and Eastridge will get the first one, which is fantastic because those houses in Eastridge haven't had good internet in the past.
"Residents up there have seen the work that is being done in the streets and they should see connections by July.
"Then it will continue around a loop, if you like, from Eastridge to South Dubbo, the CBD and out towards the airport. I don't have timing for those but I will have a meeting in the next fortnight with Mr [Michael] Tyler [NBN Co spokesperson] to get some clarity on when those rollouts are occurring."
The mayor was hopeful that by the middle of 2016, all of Dubbo would be connected or close to being connected.
He was also optimistic all of the city will be developed with the much faster fibre to the premises, which was proposed nationwide by the previous Labor government, than the fibre to the node, the cheaper and preferred option of the current government.
"My guess is once those first FSAMs are up and running, about every two to three months we will see another FSAM come on," Cr Dickerson said.
"Probably over the next year after the first one we will see all of Dubbo connected and that's assuming they continue on with the fibre connections.
"We've had every indication that's exactly what they'll be doing. Mark Coulton, the local member, put out a press release to that effect and we've seen announcements from NBN about the first FSAM being fibre and rolling out from there."
Cr Dickerson said even having some suburbs of Dubbo with FTTP would be a significant benefit for Dubbo and a major attraction for people to the city.
Asked by Cr Allan Smith when the best time to start promoting Dubbo as NBN-ready and having FTTP would be, Cr Dickerson said the council should be cautious until the work was well under way.
"The time for us to do that is when we get certainty in terms of signing of contracts from NBN.
"When they say they have signed the contracts to rollout the complete city in fibre, once we get clarity around that, that will be the time.
"We could be embarrassed if there is a change of direction and we only get a couple of FSAMs in [full] fibre and the rest fibre to the node, we would be promoting something that won't come to fruition."
