Gold Coast Titans halfback Daniel Mortimer has backed his embattled club to survive the potentially crippling drug scandal engulfing the National Rugby League's youngest franchise.
Amid calls for relocation and potential life bans for players involved in alleged drug offences, a surprised Mortimer was confident the Titans will remain on the Gold Coast and was hopeful the club would be able to return to full strength by round two, which is after the five players in question front court on March 9.
"Everyone is still staying pretty positive, which is all you can do in these kinds of situations," Mortimer said.
"Like most people we're finding out a lot through the media, and it has come out pretty quickly... it's come as quite a surprise."
Just two weeks out from the season opener against the Wests Tigers on Saturday, March 7, Titans gun Greg Bird and fellow representative star Dave Taylor joined teammates Beau Falloon, Jamie Dowling and Kalifa Faifai Loa to be stood down by the club and issued with notices to appear in court in relation to drug offences.
All five will miss the club's opening game at CBUS Super Stadium on the Gold Coast.
Enough to wilt most teams, Mortimer was confident the absence of so many front-line players won't dent the club's round one ambitions.
"At least for round one while the boys are having their cases heard in court, there's a few young guys who'll be given an opportunity and I know they'll be able to handle it," Mortimer said.
"But there's a chance we'll have everyone back for round two."
In just his second year at the club following a mid-season switch from the Sydney Roosters in 2014, the Orange junior also backed the club's position in the south east of Queensland.
"I haven't got the slightest bit of doubt the Titans will remain on the Gold Coast and remain strong," he added.
"The NRL has said it's supporting us here and there's no way in hell the NRL will let the Gold Coast slip to the AFL... not in Queensland, not in rugby league heartland."
