The youthful Dubbo side needed a win to keep their hopes of a home final alive and despite a brilliant century from Wellington's Keiran Brien they still managed to win by 22 runs.

After winning the toss and batting, Asher Robins set the platform for Dubbo as he made 69 in his side's total of 252.

Captain Matt Ellis made 40 while there also contributions from Nick Karydis (35), Sean Mason (25) and Pat Berryman (24).

New ball bowlers Angus Cusack and Blake Watmore then had Wellington in all sorts of trouble at 3-5 but Brien (105) led the fightback which eventually fell just short.

"I was really pleased with the way the young guys responded to the challenge, I thought 250 would be about par," Ellis said.

"Asher set the platform and a couple of young guys stood up with the bat and did a great job so that was very pleasing.

"Then with the ball at 3-5 I said to the boys we had to be careful because sometimes you can just cruise from there but we didn't do that, everyone bowled well but we came up against an in-form 'KB' (Brien) who played some great shots and manipulated the field really well."

Ellis was delighted his side managed to hand Wellington their first loss of the season with the young players in the Dubbo side showing commitment well beyond their years.

"They were undefeated and a very strong batting side so I thought 250 would be just about enough," he said.

"Full credit has to go to the bowlers and there was also some excellent fielding.

"I think it helps having such a young and athletic team, we batted the full 50 overs and kept them in the field and then we had the fresh legs in the field."

After bouncing back from the recent loss to Nyngan, Ellis said his side now faced a crucial match against Cobar at Dubbo this weekend.

"We're focused on that match and we want to make sure our bowlers stick to the plan and the batsmen to choose which ball to cash in on and which to just rotate the strike but I'm pleased," he said.
