The Crackerjacks beat CYMS Cougars by 31 runs, with Gavin's 44 helping his side post a competitive total after things looked shaky through the middle stages of the first innings.

Openers Jason Green (22) and Ed Haylock (16) put on a rapid-fire 36 for the first wicket but when Green fell to the bowling of Callan Braithwaite it sparked a mini-collapse.

The Crackerjacks lost 6-32 through the middle of their innings before Gavin and Angus Cusack (28no) came to the rescue.

They combined for a 65-run partnership that ensured the Crackerjacks would post a defendable total before a couple of late wickets restricted the men in maroon to a total of 7-141 off their 20 overs.

Captain Stuart Naden was the best of the CYMS bowlers, finishing with figures of 3-21 off his four-over spell of off-spin.

Needing seven runs an over from the outset, CYMS' chase started in the worst possible fashion when Tom Carruthers (8) was cleaned up by Nathan Reichelt.

While Ryan Medley (46) was hitting the ball crisply at one end, he failed to find much in the way of support.

Some accurate bowling from the Crackerjacks resulted in the regular fall of wickets, with their efforts with the ball backed up by a couple of valuable pieces of fielding.

Firstly, Cusack was able to run out Naden (6) with a direct hit before Keiran Brien removed Todd Summers (5) via another direct hit from square leg.

The end result was the Cougars lost 7-35 as they went from 2-57 to 9-92 before finishing their 20 overs on 9-110.

Gavin backed up his effort with the bat by claiming 2-8 from two overs, including the vital wicket of Medley.

The Megahit competition will resume on Friday, January 16 with a double-header.

The first match will pit Cricketer Arms Journeymen against Newtown, with that match to be followed by a contest between Rugby and CYMS.
