Firefighters responded to reports of a possible fire about 11.20am but did not find one, a spokesperson for NSW Fire and Rescue said.
She said the air conditioning was being examined.
Shoppers took to social media to report alarms had gone off and that the store had been evacuated.
Ms Forrester said Big W shut as a precaution but reopened by the afternoon.
The rest of the shopping centre operated as per normal, she said.
