According to weatherzone.com, more than 27 millimetres of rain fell in the city on Saturday, bringing to a halt all Orange District Cricket Association first, second and third grade games while also forcing ODCA administration into calling off the Western Zone and Newcastle country championship decider.
Orange has already exceeded its long-term average rainfall for December with 101mm falling across the city during the month's first six days - up on the 89mm average - and, with Western Zone officials in toe, ODCA president Mark Frecklington said abandoning yesterday's play was really an easy decision.
"The pitch itself was fine, but the outfield and the bowling run ups weren't," he said, the decision made at 5.30pm on Saturday.
"We spoke to (Wade Park curator) Brice Cousins as well and there was just no chance of play. With all the rain we had on Saturday and more predicted, it was better we made the call knowing Newcastle hadn't left yet."
The match does have a back-up date, though, with February 15 set to stage the decider between Western Zone and Newcastle, both sides dominant winners out of their respective southern and northern championship carnivals.
Frecklington was confident the match will still be staged at Wade Park.
"We weren't given any indication that that wouldn't be the case," the ODCA boss said.
The wet weather affected sport in Dubbo at the weekend as well, with second grade cricket matches called off before play while third grade games were played up until a storm swept across the city, forcing their abandonment.
Two of the three first grade games were completed, however the storm put an end to the CYMS v Rugby match at No.3 Oval.
Saturday night's planned sprintcar racing at the Morris Park Motorsport Complex was also called off due to the wet weather experienced in the city in the lead-up to the event.
