Newtown has survived its toughest test to date in the 2014/15 Whitney Cup season, beating Macquarie by 49 runs in their two-day match at No.2 Oval.
Macquarie started the second day of the game on 0-17 in reply to Newtown's first innings total of 215 but it was the 'Skinner Show' as brothers Mat and Steve took all 10 wickets between them.
Openers Ed Haylock and Richard Hawker added 10 runs to their starting score before Mat Skinner (6-59) removed Haylock for 10.
Ian Marchant (21) and Hawker took the score on to 58 before Marchant was dismissed, sparking a collapse which saw seven wickets fall for just 52 runs.
At 8-110 hope appeared to be gone for the Blues but Jason Green had other ideas.
The veteran occupied the crease with Hamish Smith (4) for the best part of 12 overs, taking the score along to 164 before Smith fell and the match was delayed due to lightning.
Five overs of play were lost while the storm swept through and when the match resumed Green (70) was the last to fall, off the bowling of Steve Skinner (4-71).
"It was a strange day but we were glad to get away with the win," Mat Skinner said.
"Macquarie put up a good fight but I was happy with how we fought because it's the first time this season we haven't had a really big score to play with.
"We needed to be patient and try to dry up the runs, and that's why Steve and myself did a lot of the bowling.
"There was a plan that we needed to execute. They were waiting for us to bowl bad balls for them to score off and we were trying to bowl a lot of dots and make them play some shots."
Even though his side managed to walk away with the win, Skinner said he wasn't really confident at any time during the day.
"We were taking wickets fairly regularly but they still had 'Greeny' at the crease and he can win a match for them in a few overs, so we were never really comfortable," Skinner said.
"Then the lightning came and we had to go off for a bit which cost us overs. CYMS and Rugby packed up and went home but we thought we would see if it would pass by and it worked out well for us in the end."
Newtown's final game before the Christmas break will be a two-day clash against Souths starting next Saturday.
And while the Tigers have a comfortable lead atop the Whitney Cup ladder, Skinner said his side will be focused on a good end to 2014.
"They will have Tim Berry back next week, which will be big for them," Skinner said.
"If we could go into Christmas unbeaten it would be amazing. We couldn't have imagined that at the start of the year but we need to play another two good days of cricket for that to happen."
