The Cougars suffered a disjointed Twenty20 campaign last season with washouts affecting their momentum while in the two matches they did play they suffered heavy losses against Newtown and Christie’s Crackerjacks.
But skipper Ben O’Donnell has called on two of the club’s most well-known veterans for tonight’s clash with Colts, who will be playing under the name Cricketer’s Arms Journeymen.
Jaspal Bansal and Brian Carroll, who have both starred in the Pinnington Cup this season, have received the call up for the short form match and O’Donnell believes both can have a big impact on the match.
“It’s good to see ‘JB’ (Bansal) back, he might not offer much running but he likes to hit the new ball and he likes to hit it far so hopefully he can get a few runs for us and ‘BC’ (Carroll) was onto me last season and he was going to play but there was a washout but he’s definitely keen and his form has been excellent so I’m looking forward to seeing what the big fella can do.”
Carroll has been outstanding with the new ball for the Pinnington Cup-leading CYMS side and his pace and consistency will be a boost.
Bansal and Carroll will bring plenty of experience and form with them but there will also be a touch of youth in the Cougars side with juniors Callan Braithwaite and Brandon Dodd both named.
The Journeyman recorded a win, a loss and a washout in last season’s Megahit but with players like Chris Morton, Wes Giddings and Jason Ryan in their line-up they are capable of having a real impact on this season’s competition.
Their Colts side comfortably defeated CYMS in round one of this season’s Whitney Cup with Nathan Jones taking nine wickets and scoring a half century in the victory but O’Donnell said Twenty20 is a totally different game.
“T20 is really unpredictable so we’ve got to be disciplined and if we don’t bowl to our plans and field like we should then it can get away from us and make things hard,” he said.
Slower bowling, especially spin, is always a big part in Twenty20 matches and the Journeymen will be hoping Jones can star again to cover the loss of last season’s front line tweakers Stuart Naden and Will Wolter, now at CYMS and Souths respectively.
Naden has since become a key member of the Cougars line-up and his combination with fellow new recruit and spinning all-rounder Ryan Medley will be key for the men in green tonight.
The big bash action starts from 6pm.
