Dubbo mayor Mathew Dickerson said the use of an electric vehicle was well suited to the current role of the mayor as the majority of his car travel consisted of short trips about Dubbo.
"Electric and hybrid cars make up about 14 per cent of global sales but they are still relatively uncommon in Australia accounting for only 2.07 per cent of the national passenger car market for 2014 so far.
"This will start to increase quite rapidly as the technology continues to get better and cars are designed to suit our longer distances. There are now 21 electric and hybrid models available in Australia.
"The petrol engine removes the concerns that are associated with dedicated electric vehicles of "range anxiety."
"In over 12 months it has only been refuelled a handful of times and the fuel economy is below 1.5 litres per 100 kilometres.
"The vehicle is recharged at my house where I have solar panels installed so the sun is used to power the vehicle. Consequently the emissions are extremely low and very good for the environment," Cr Dickerson said.
