Dubbo mayor Mathew Dickerson has announced the World Cup will be at Dubbo on December 2 in the lead-up to the event, which begins next February.
Dickerson was in Sydney on Sunday to sit in on a Cricket NSW presentation for local government in relation to governance of the game when he discovered the Cup would be making a visit to Dubbo.
"A man came in basically just advertising the World Cup and then he said a regional tour and I sat up and asked about it and Dubbo is basically the first stop," mayor Dickerson said.
Few details are known at the moment with the original idea from the organisers to show the World Cup at Victoria Park but with the road works on Darling Street making access difficult it is yet to be confirmed.
It will mark the second time this year a piece of major sporting silverware has been in the region after the Bledisloe Cup was shown off at Caltex Park when the Australian Wallabies were in town as part of the Bush2Bledisloe tour.
"All we know at this stage is to keep the date December 2 free," Dickerson said.
"It's going to be great and I was really impressed when the Bledisloe Cup was here and they allowed people to get up close and touch it and have photos with it. Cups like this shouldn't be put up in a glass cabinet so hopefully it will be the same with the Cricket World Cup."
While in attendance at the meeting in Sydney, Dickerson also continued his push to see first-class cricket played at Dubbo, with the chance of a Sheffield Shield match or Big Bash pre-season match a real possibility in the coming years.
"There was nothing definite but it opened some to talk to Cricket NSW about the possibility of us getting some cricket here, there's a Sheffield Shield match played in Wagga this season so they are keen to see it in regional areas," he said.
"The idea of a Sheffield Shield or Big Bash warm-up match is something they were happy to entertain and it could even be a match against a representative side or a Dubbo team but there's really nothing definite yet."
