CYMS veteran opening bowler Brian Carroll has made a habit of bowling long spells for little runs in recent years and he was at his miserly best again on Saturday as his six wickets gave the Cougars the upper hand after day one of their Pinnington Cup clash with Macquarie at Lady Cutler 2.
Carroll steamed in for 15.4 overs and finished with the figures of 6-18, including the last five wickets of the innings, as the Blues lost 6-21 to be all out for 159.
Dave McAlister and Yogi Chawla then navigated the final eight overs of the day to have the competition leaders at 0-34 at stumps.
After earlier winning the toss and batting, Macquarie had got themselves to 0-25 before Carroll removed Brenton Morgan (13).
There were solid contributions from the middle, led by Bharath Ramakrishnappa (46) and Brant Mann (32), but CYMS continued to strike.
Carroll's reintroduction quickly brought about the end of his innings, with his last four wickets all rattling the stumps, and with McAlister (25 not out) and Chawla (7 not out) setting a good platform, the Cougars are well placed for next week.

A team effort with the ball has given Rugby the honours on day one of their clash with RSL Colts, bowling then men in red out for 144 and finishing the day at 1-38 in reply.
No bowler went for more than four runs an over in a disciplined display from the Rugby side, with youngster Lachlan Harper (2-41 off 15.2) and Glenn Shepherd (3-28) the best.
Adam Barraclough (35), Tim Howarth (35) and Jakke Gardiner (31) all made starts for Colts but no one could go on and make the big score as the Rugby bowlers kept the pressure on.
Tyler Woodrow, Garry Goodman and Jason Coyle were the other wicket-takers.
Rod Leonard then began the run chase in an aggressive manner, with five of his six first scoring shorts all boundaries, but on 31 he was dismissed by spinner Gardiner and Rugby finished the day at 0-35 with Harper (5 not out) and Brett Paul (0 not out) to resume next week.

Peter Morrison's 66 was the highlight for Newtown on Saturday as they played out an even day one against South Dubbo at Lady Cutler 4.
Morrison's half century was the top score of the day as the Tigers made 210 before being bowled out with just one over left in the day.
Nathan Astri was the main wicket-taker for the Hornets, taking 4-38 while Morrison received support from David Brown (35 not out) and Elliot Carlin (34).
David Powell (1 not out) and Matt Wright (1 not out) survived the final six balls of the day from Craig Edenborough to finish at 0-2 and set up an intriguing day two next week.
