Tiffany Pope, 27, was brought before Dubbo Local Court for breaching bond conditions imposed for stealing.
A solicitor from the Aboriginal Legal Service said Pope had attempted to remain engaged with supervision.
"She has had a tumultuous time trying to manage her affairs," the solicitor said.
"The bonds are due to expire in November. She is engaged in a methadone program."
Magistrate Eckhold said Pope looked intoxicated.
"You are having difficulty staying awake and you are being sentenced," the magistrate said.
Pope took exception to the comment and denied she had taken illicit drugs.
"I've had methadone," she said.
Magistrate said Pope may be "topping up" with other drugs.
The Aboriginal Legal Service said the items stolen from a supermarket were for a child and included infant lotion and powder and a baby spoon.
Magistrate Eckhold said the goods were either for a baby or easy sale.
"You have gone to jail for larceny twice in the last six years," the magistrate said.
"You have long standing difficulty with drugs and need to do what you are asked by Community Corrections.
"You have not been complying because things have been chaotic.
"You are not without hope but need to understand there are consequences if you do not comply.
"You have not kept Community Corrections appointments and have turned up late or left halfway through."
Magistrate Eckhold imposed a seven-month suspended jail sentence as an alternative to full-time custody."
"You have gone to jail for this type of thing before," he said.
"If you re-offend the bond will be revoked."
