GREATER numbers of passengers flying between Dubbo and Sydney shows there is a need for a discount airline like Virgin Airlines locally, according to Dubbo City deputy mayor Ben Shields.

Dubbo Regional Airport has achieved record numbers in 2014, with 17,500 passengers using the service in September, more than any other month in the airport's history. The two carriers, QantasLink and Regional Express, both achieved good results, with QantasLink also setting a record for the number of passengers using the Dubbo service in September.
Cr Shields said Dubbo would benefit from Virgin and recent growth shows the city would be a viable option.
"The biggest thing that stops most people from flying isn't the security screening or the lack of destinations, it's the cost of tickets," Cr Shields said.
"If we could get low cost airline like Virgin, who would offer cheaper tickets, more people will choose to fly and our numbers will continue to grow."
Cr Shields was confident there was the customer-base in Dubbo to sustain another airline and he said it may also force the existing services to become more competitive.
"You have regional cities like Coffs Harbour, Albury and Wagga who have multiple carriers including Virgin that service their airports and are viable so there is no reason Dubbo couldn't do it as well," he said.
Cr Shields had dealings with Virgin at their Brisbane headquarters 18 months ago and said he was confident they could be attracted to the city if the council and the community put up a strong case, especially with the recent results.
"It's a numbers game for those guys. They are interested in cold, hard data and we have to use the figures we have now to show them why they should come to Dubbo," he said.
"I'm pushing for the council and councillors to use this data to our advantage.
"We can make a renewed push and involve the whole city, this isn't something that should be done behind closed doors.
"Let us not just celebrate the success of our air industry by patting ourselves on the back.
"Let's use our 12.70 per cent increase data to grow our business and provide a great service to even more people of Dubbo - especially people who still find air travel unaffordable."
