Dubbo Deadlys, consisting of about 20 people, mostly women, exercised four days a week for 10 weeks as part of the NSW Knockout Health Challenge.
The NSW Knockout Health Challenge is state-wide annual challenge initiated by Medicare Local.
As fitness increased this soon turned into participants undertaking their own exercise, such as walking, on the other days.
Their trainer CJ Wills taught them about healthy eating and gave them the skills to exercise with whatever they could find, wherever they were.
Some of the participants chose to abstain from junk food and alcohol as part of the challenge.
They recently held an awards ceremony for their efforts, prizes included gym vouchers and health diaries.
Dubbo Deadlys held weigh ins and recorded body measurements to "make everyone accountable," said Deborah Ryan of the Dubbo Deadlys.
Their "biggest loser" lost 6kg during the challenge and has lost a further 3 kg since.
The fitness group are now urging people to join and take a leaf from their book, said Ms Ryan.
"This has changed the life of everyone in that group," she said.
"We're trying to inspire other people in the community to participate and get healthy- it is achievable.
"There are changes that you can make to your diet and your lifestyle, but you've got to do it and get motivated because no-one's going to do it for you."
Dubbo Deadlys meet for an hour training session at 5pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Victoria Park at the exercise equipment.
