The family-run store was decked out in blue and white yesterday in support of the Canterbury Bulldogs, ahead of the NRL grand final between the Bulldogs and South Sydney Rabbitohs tomorrow.
Store owner Tony Jones, a self-professed Canterbury fanatic, said he had a mixed response from his customers who had visited the newsagency.
“Everyone wanted to pull it down when they came in this morning. We’ve had probably 100 Rabbitohs supporters and two Bulldogs supporters come in,” Mr Jones said.
But his customers’ reactions hasn’t fazed Mr Jones, who is adamant the Bulldogs will bring home the trophy from the ANZ Stadium.
“I hope we win. I don’t care by how many points, as long as we win, I’ll be happy,” he said.
“I don’t care that it’s been 43 years since the Rabbitohs have won, it’s going to be 44 years now.”
His wife and three children are all fans of the club too, and Mr Jones said one of the favourite family pastimes was getting together for a barbecue to watch every NRL game, not just Canterbury’s matches, each week.
“I’ve been a fan of the Bulldogs for as long as I can remember. I went down to watch a game between the Dogs and the Roosters in Sydney with the Police Boys’ Club when I was a boy. Canterbury won, and I’ve been a fan ever since.
“I love the toughness of [rugby league], the skill. The games keep getting better.”
