Two members of a church aged 30 and 34 were confronted by a man holding a knife when they went to the Dalton Street church to collect food from the kitchen.
The intruder ran from the building with the stolen money and the pair gave chase before losing sight of him a short time later.
Police from Lachlan Local Area Command were called to the church and established a crime scene.
Detectives have released a description of a man they wish to speak with they believe can help with their inquiries.
He is described as being about 30 years old and 153 to 163cm tall. He was last seen wearing a black beanie, black hooded jumper, dark pants and dark joggers with sparkly laces.
