Organisers are confident that number will grow by the time the event gets under way on Saturday and they are hoping to see teams embracing the ‘Race for a Cure’ theme.
“We always have a heap of people who sign up on the day to take part so we are very excited to see just how many people are embracing the cause this year,” Relay for Life chairperson Karen Isbester said.
“Every year people get in and dress themselves up, as well as their tents and they go to great lengths. It’s part of what makes this event so great and as someone who isn’t hugely creative, one of my favourite parts is to see what people have come up with.
“It’s amazing to see what the community can do and can achieve. It’s fantastic to see the support from people and businesses, especially when it comes to Relay for Life.”
This year the event has some incredible entertainment including a visit from V8 Supercar driver David Reynolds and performances from bands One Proud Monkey, the Macquarie Valley Mudflappers and Brandon Troutman.
Main sponsor Clancy Ford have also got in to the spirit, offering to donate $40 to cancer research every time someone test drives one of their vehicles at the event.
The Cancer Council is also encouraging people to have their photo taken at the event for a campaign that aims to show the future NSW government the faces of those who want to see improvements in five cancer-related issues prioritised by local councils, including increasing palliative care services, addressing the selling of tobacco, chemotherapy co-payments, access to care co-ordination, and improving cancer services for Aboriginal people.
Relay for Life gets under way on Saturday from 12pm and continues until 9am Sunday morning.
