Chris Thompson was critically injured after the vehicle he was driving ran off the road and into a tree just outside the township south-east of Dubbo.
He was taken to Dubbo Hospital then airlifted to Westmead Hospital in Sydney.
He was in a critical but stable condition, a hospital spokeswoman said yesterday.
As Mr Thompson, a husband and father-of-three who lives at Dubbo but grew up at Wellington, battled in hospital his much-loved Wellington Cowboys won a place in next weekend's major semi-final.
His brothers, Nathan and Scott played in the match, with twin brother Nathan carrying the number 10 jersey on to the field prior to the game.
Captain-coach Justin Toomey-White said they had wanted to win for the Thompson family.
"It's been a tough couple of days for us but we've worked hard to be ready for this game and it was a good result," he said after the match. We also wanted to win for them and their family as well."
