Members of the Dubbo Woodturning and Woodcrafting club arrived for their weekly meeting yesterday at the Cobra Street workshop to find the Colorbond sheeting had been unscrewed off two locked doors to allow thieves access to the workshop.
More than $4000 in specialist woodworking tools and equipment had been taken.
Club treasurer Charles Fletcher said the robbery was unusual because they targeted a number of items that wouldn't catch the eye of most people.
"There were a couple of thousand dollars worth of chucks, $1200 in router bits, $400 in cordless drills and a couple of hundred in drill bits," Mr Fletcher said.
"These chucks wouldn't be any good to most people, they are specifically for a lathe.
"We are hoping that if any tradesmen are offered these kind of items that they will recognise them and report it to police."
The break-in is believed to have occurred sometime between Saturday afternoon and Wednesday morning.
"We had our general meeting at 1pm on Saturday and locked everything up after that and some of the guys came down here for the meeting and found this," Mr Fletcher said.
"They tried to get into the other shed as well, they had taken a few screws out but they didn't actually get in."
Mr Fletcher said the club would look to increase security but the associated costs would be a burden on the club and could impact on some of their charity work.
"We were broken into three years ago and on that occasion they took a saw and a few small tools and this is the second time it has happened to us," he said.
"The club only makes a small amount of money from raffles and club membership fees and using some of that money it sponsors the oncology unit at the hospital. Whenever we have some money we go to them and ask them what they want and we buy it for them.
"The club has been here for 30 years and has about 50 members. Most of the members are retired and it's an opportunity for them to meet up and make a few toys for charity."
Mr Fletcher said the club is insured.
Police are investigating the incident and anyone with information is asked to contact Dubbo police on 68831599 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
