The 48-year-old from Dubbo faced Magistrate Andrew Eckhold via video link from Parklea Correctional Centre.
He cannot be named due to laws protecting the identity of children.
The man did not enter pleas to 25 offences alleged to have been committed against five girls and one boy at Dubbo and Stockton between 1990 and 2007.
Documents tendered to the court by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) allege the children were aged 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 13 and 14 when acts of indecency and sexual intercourse took place.
The man is alleged to have privately exhibited banned adult pornography when a child was present.
He faced 11 charges of having sexual intercourse with children under the age of 10, eight charges of committing acts of indecency on children under the age of 10, three charges of having sexual intercourse with children aged between 10 and 14 years and single charges of committing an act of indecency on a child under the age of 16 and aggravated indecent assault on a victim under the age of 16.
Dressed in a prison-issue green tracksuit and wearing glasses, the man watched court proceedings from an audiovisual room.
He held one hand over his mouth and rested his other hand on a table.
The man was not required to say anything and did not apply for bail.
The DPP asked for a six-week adjournment to obtain further information.
The application was not opposed by a solicitor from the Aboriginal Legal Service.
The man did not consent to a prosecution application to carry out a forensic procedure.
Legal argument about the forensic procedure will be put before Magistrate Eckhold during a hearing on September 23.
The 25 criminal charges were adjourned to October 8.
Bail was formally refused by the court.
Interim apprehended violence orders were imposed to provide protection for the alleged victims.
