It’s Mudgee Dragons’ biggest game of the season but they will have to do it without their player-coach Jack Afamasaga.
The leading player of Group 10 is set to miss Mudgee’s two final home-and-away matches because of a calf injury he picked up early in the Dragons’ 60-12 demolition of Oberon.
Afamasaga took the ball up for one of his usual bustling runs in the 12th minute.
But something wasn’t right and there were concerns from the Dragons’ faithful when the former NRL enforcer clutched at his leg before he played the ball.
He immediately hobbled to the sideline and went off the field where he was taken up the tunnel to the change rooms.
He was seen later with ice on his right calf and out of his playing gear.
Speaking about the incident, Afamasaga said he was unsure how long he would be out for.
“I might miss a few weeks. It’s a calf strain,” he said before admitting he hadn’t seen a specialist and finding it difficult to move around.
“I was tackled and I thought it was illegal for someone to barrel you below your knees. It was like a cannonball tackle. In the NRL that sort of stuff gets put on report.”
Playing without their big name player for the majority of the match didn’t seem to worry Mudgee who went on to post 10 tries and record their biggest win of the season.
“The boys played really well. They handled themselves really well especially after I went off. You don’t plan for those things,” he said.
“It was hard for them to keep the pressure on when you are up by so much but it was one of our better games of football we have played.”
Despite his absence in Sunday’s game in which Mudgee can win the minor premiership for the first time since 2009, Afamasaga says there are capable replacements.
“I’ve got a few options like Hamish [Bryant] and Demitrius [Ainuu]; we are [looking] comfortable,” Afamasaga said.
“Hamish is one of the toughest boys in the team. He does the hard yards.”
Together with Chris Ward, Bryant was one of the outstanding players in last week’s win, scoring two tries in the process.
But he needs - and the rest of the Dragons’ players for that matter – to be on their game as they take on Bathurst St Pat’s on Sunday.
It is one versus two and top spot is on the line.
St Pat’s recorded a 52-32 win over Panthers last week in the Bathurst derby but it was far from convincing according to their coach Kurt Hancock.
Afamasaga expects the blue and whites to come out with all guns blazing.
“I’m expecting them to play like they did in the second half against us last time,” Afamasaga said.
On that occasion, Mudgee was up 22-6 at half-time before St Pat’s fought back in the second stanza.
A late penalty goal by Terry Wood got the Dragons over the line 24-23.
Both teams were undefeated at that time but on Sunday, they are coming off some patchy form.
“St Pat’s and us have been on and off while Hawks have hit their straps. That’s the thing, anything can happen,” he said.
What Afamasaga would like to see happen is for Mudgee to win the minor premiership.
“The plan is to win on Sunday so we are four points in front of Pat’s then beat CYMS next week before having two weeks off for the finals,” he said.
Premier league kicks off at 2pm with women’s league tag beginning proceedings at 10.30am followed by the under 18s and first division.
