Seventeen-year-old Mitchell was one of five local juniors who have travelled the state to compete and all returned home with admirable results and even some medals.
Mitchell has caught the eye of a number of respected members of the cycling community with some outstanding performances throughout the winter in open road races.
With some good form under his belt he recently travelled to Canberra to contest the National under-19 Road Championships amongst a field of the best under-19 riders from across Australia and New Zealand.
The 118-kilometre road race consisted of three laps of a challenging 39-kilometre course at Mount Stromlo, which featured a total climb of 547 metres per lap.
The race of attrition, which saw 32 of the 76 riders abandon the event, was eventually won by experienced Victorian rider Lucas Hamilton.
Riding in his first year as an under-19 rider, Mitchell finished at the head of a chase group in 31st position, a hugely impressive result in his debut at under 19s level and racing.
Heading into the criterium the next day with plenty of confidence, Mitchell again put in one of his best performances as he built on his 10th place in qualifying to finish ninth.
A number of crashes and mechanical incidents again saw 25 of the starting 49 riders abandon the race but Mitchell placed himself perfectly in the race to finish in the lead pack.
The bunch crossed the line almost simultaneously with ninth-placed Mitchell just two seconds behind eventual winner Michael Storer (WA).
Inside the top 10, Mitchell's efforts again drew plenty of praise from all those in attendance.
The talented youngster will now prepare for the upcoming state titles, and the experience and confidence gained and the results achieved will stand him in good stead and ensure his position as a real rider to watch.
Meanwhile, Luke Ensor and Kurt Eather (under 15) and under-13 riders Dylan Eather and Haylee Fuller recently travelled to Sutherland to compete in the NSW Country Junior Road Race championships.
In a difficult 18-kilometre road race, Western Region Academy of Sport (WRAS) riders Ensor and Kurt Eather both put in strong performances.
Ensor finished with a bronze medal after being part of the early leading pack while Eather was the main driver of a chase group and finished in a very strong seventh position.
Dylan Eather continued his fantastic road season with gold medal in the under 13 boys division. Eather proved too strong for the bunch in the final sprint, and is now heading towards the state championships as one the favourites.
In the under-13 girls event the ever-consistent Haylee Fuller positioned herself at the front of the nine-kilometre race which resulted in a great battle between the front three and in a strong finish Fuller crossed the line in second, claiming the silver medal.
