Judy Armstrong has been a Zumbo fan since she first laid eyes on him on Channel Ten's MasterChef, where he earned the nickname Patissier of Pain for the notoriously difficult dessert challenges he set for terrified contestants.
Mrs Armstrong was so excited to receive an email from her sister-in-law Chris Horan last week informing her of the impending visit she immediately began organising a day trip to Coonamble.
Joined by her husband Rocket and her parents, the group drove to Heiken's IGA at Coonamble where Zumbo was meeting with fans.
"We had a chat to Adriano's dad first about how proud he was of his son and how wonderful it was to have him back for a visit," Mrs Armstrong said.
"He's very busy so he doesn't get to visit Coonamble often. We did, however, suggest we would love him to visit Dubbo".
Mrs Armstrong bought some of Zumbo's signature macarons, known as Zumbarons, while her parents purchased some of the Zumbo-branded salted caramel Tim Tams.
It was then time to meet the great man himself, and Mrs Armstrong said Zumbo was every bit as handsome in real life as he was on television.
"One of my friends had given me his cookbook and he signed it, he was just so nice," she said.
Mrs Armstrong said her daughter could not believe her bad luck in being overseas during the visit.
"She goes to Macquarie University and regularly visits his store in Balmain," she said.
Mrs Armstrong, who ranked rosewater soft serve as one of her favourite Zumbo desserts, said she had tried to make some of the macarons that featured in the Zumbo cookbook but they had unfortunately not been up to the standard of those prepared in the Zumbo outlets.
"I do enjoy looking at the pictures in the book though," she said.
While many would not be able to show such restraint, Mrs Armstrong said she still had some Zumbarons left over from the weekend she was yet to eat.
"Because his stores are so far away and visits are few and far between, we have to strike a balance between keeping them fresh and trying to make them last as long as possible," she said.
Mrs Armstrong said she was busy planning her next trip to The Star to enjoy some more Zumbo treats.
