It was only the second win of the season for the home side but it keeps them above Forbes as they look to avoid the 2014 Group 11 wooden spoon.
The Rabbitohs had fallen into a bit of a slump in recent weeks as spirited efforts against Narromine and Macquarie were followed by poor performances against Forbes and CYMS and things were no to improve against the Roosters.
Already without injured star centre EJ Fernando, the Rabbitohs made their first trek to Cobar severely under-strength, with the likes of Kurt Fuller, Mick Gibson and Steve Riley all unavailable.
Coach Rob Lake tied on the boots for his first match in 2014 and he scored one of his side's four tries as he attempted to lead from the front.
Centre Anthony Thurston scored two and veteran Peter Boon also got his name on the score sheet while Shannon Fuller kicked three goals.
But it was a day for the Roosters and fullback Michael Furner finished with 12 points after a try and four goals.
Tristan Everett, Andrew Sellwood, Kewa Kili and Luke Moody were the other try scorers in the morale-boosting win.
Cobar made it a day to remember with a win in reserve grade while Westside enjoyed success in the under-18s as Thomas Clow's two tries led the young Rabbitohs to a 22-18 win. Matthew Mearritt and Cruize Fuller also scored tries in the win while Jaman Crawford nailed three conversions.
In the reserve grade match the Roosters claimed a 22-16 win in a highly entertaining match.
Marc Anderson scored a double while for Westside Dave Carriage got across the line twice and also kicked two conversions.
