Nick Kyrgios responds to Canadian rapper Drake's angry comments

It all started at a Wimbledon media conference, after the up-and-coming tennis star blamed the rapper's music for his poor start in his third-round match.

Despite winning his match in four sets against Czech player Jiri Vesely, the 19-year-old critiqued his performance by saying he lost the first set thanks to his pre-match music choice.

''Today was a bit of rap, actually,'' Kyrgios said, talking about his music selection. ''I came out really flat, so hopefully I won’t listen to that again. It was actually Drake. Didn’t do the job for me.''

These comments managed to make their way back to Drake, who got a little upset that Kyrgios would blame a bad tennis performance on his music.

In an interview about his role hosting ESPN’s annual sporting awards, the ESPYs, Drake was asked which international sports star he’d like to meet and he picked the Aussie tennis player.

''I also want to meet this guy that says that he lost because he listened to my music,'' Drake said.

''I also want to meet that guy and look him in the eye and see exactly who he is as a man and size him up and then chop him right down.''

The hip hop artist, getting his facts a bit muddled, hit back at the tennis player by telling the American reporters no one would remember the tennis player’s name.

''Nick whatever-his-name-is – 'cause he didn’t win, so that’s how he’s going to be remembered: ‘Nick whatever-his-name-is.’ ''

The Canberra native, who beat world number one Rafael Nadal for a place in the quarter finals, has been quick to address Drake's comments.

He took to Twitter on Tuesday morning to clear things up – also clearing up the fact that he didn't actually lose the match.

''Let's be clear,'' Kyrgios wrote. ''I like @Drake – love his music, just said I was a little flat, ended up winning that match. No blame game here.''

Music is clearly an important part of the teenager's routine. He tweeted a photograph on Monday showing him about to put headphones on, captioned ''my escape''.

However, it is unclear what Kyrgios listens to besides Drake before his matches.

Drake, who released his fourth ablum Nothing Was the Same last year, is yet to respond to the tennis player's kind-of apology, despite being tagged in the tennis player's tweet.

Maybe Kyrgios will be able to make it up to Drake during his next tennis tournament, by tweeting about listening to the rapper's latest track 0 to 100.

It would be great if our rising tennis star could even meet Drake in person – after all, his next big series is in the rapper's country.

After a bit of a shake-up to his coaching team – leaving Simon Rea – Kyrgios will be heading to Toronto, Canada, in early August for the ATP 1000.

However, the Canadian rapper will be touring New York in early August as part of his Drake Vs Lil' Wayne tour, so the two will have to stick to communicating through third-party channels for now.
