Rhonda Dorin said she took the stray dog in about six months ago after she had seen him wandering the streets.
But two weekends ago she was horrified to find the dog had been killed. "I found him dead on the front verandah on the Sunday night, it was between about 10.30 and 10.45pm," she said.
"He had a split down the front of his head and he just sort of flopped - they had broken his back.
"I buried him the next day."
The incident was reported to police, she said. The dog, affectionately named Scruff, had been elusive at first but the family gained his trust by feeding him and making him a bed on the verandah.
He was a friendly, happy dog, according to Mrs Dorin.
"He wouldn't hurt anyone," she said.
"I miss him, I go out to feed him and realise he's not there.
"My daughter just cried and cried, and my grandson keeps asking where the dog is, he misses him too."
Mrs Dorin said she wanted to speak out to make people aware of what was happening in her neighbourhood.
"I just want the cruelty to stop," she said.
News of the attack angered fellow Dubbo residents who took to social media to express their disgust and labelling the perpetrators as "scum of the earth" and "lowlifes".
Meanwhile Mrs Dorin had a message to the person or people that carried out the attack.
"Show some guts and come forward," she said.
