ANIMAL lovers will be concerned about the RSPCA’s decision to cease managing the Dubbo pound.
Will the Dubbo City Council, likely to have to step in, or any other group that may take over be able to provide the same levels of care and service?
The RSPCA, which has managed the animal shelter since 2005, will not renew its $330,000-a-year contract and will focus on its local branch and continuing its important program to rehome animals using a commercial pet shop.
There could be job losses. Some RSPCA workers have already moved to new employment.
The RSPCA said its new direction was about efficiency and how it could best serve the community with its resources.
It is a sign of the times with many organisations and businesses undergoing consolidations, contractions, restructures and changes to services.
But, it is not something expected at the RSPCA, which is synonymous with the care of all creatures great and small.
The contract ends on June 30. The council has had no other applicants.
The RSPCA will help by staying on until the year end when it is expected the council will take over management.
A concern is the loss of invaluable skills, experience and all-encompassing RSPCA commitment to animal welfare and safety.
The RSPCA provides a vital service. It is hoped circumstances will change and it may be able to return to the shelter in the future.
