Two weeks out from what he describes as the biggest fight of his career, Dubbo-born mixed martial artist Kyle Noke says he's ready to do Australia proud.
Noke has been a coach on the most recent series of The Ultimate Fighter, which has pitted 16 fighters from Australia and Canada against each other as they chase a lucrative contract in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
As in past seasons of the reality program, the coaches will do battle, with Noke pitted against Canadian Patrick Cote in the main event of the April 17 finale to be held in Quebec.
"I always say that my next fight is the biggest of my career and I mean it, but this time after coaching the boys I feel it's important for more than just myself," Noke said from his Albuquerque training base this week.
"Every time I fight I go out to represent Australia and the two places I've called home, Dubbo and the Sunshine Coast, but this time I've been charged with preparing my team for this as well as myself so while it's been different, it's been exciting at the same time.
"It was really exciting being a coach this time as opposed to a contestant like I was a few years ago. The boys were all locked up in the house together where after training us coaches were able to go off and ski and do what we wanted.
"Dealing with all the personalities was also a lot of fun. Having that background in the house I knew what to expect but to be honest all the boys were professional, they did what the coaching team asked of them and it was really rewarding to see them make progress as fighters and people."
Filming of the series wrapped up back in December but the live finale in two weeks will not only decide the fate of the young fighters, but will also be Noke's first step back towards forging a career which so far has been impressive but injury-interrupted.
The 34-year-old boasts a career MMA record of 20-6-1, including four wins and two losses in the UFC, but hasn't fought since September 2012 when he stopped Charlie Brenneman in 45 seconds in his return to the lightweight division.
"I'm really excited about this fight against Patrick. He's an awesome fighter who has proven himself against some of the best and it's going to be a big challenge," Noke said.
"But my body feels great, my training camp has gone well and while I will be keeping an eye on the fights throughout the night I have to focus on my fight and when the gate closes I have to go to work.
"I think Patrick and I match up well and are very similar fighters.
"He has a great chin, good hands and his Jiu Jitsu skills are very strong so I know this is going to be a tough fight.
"He is going to have the support of the crowd but I've fought most of my life in other people's backyards and that just gives me extra incentive knowing I'm not going to be the favourite in the fight."
The Ultimate Fighter: Nations finale will be shown live on Foxtel's FX channel at 9am on Thursday, April 17.
