Four citizens who are enthusiastic moviegoers got together to establish the page 'Please don't close the cinema in Dubbo' and they have been overwhelmed by the response they have received from the public.

As of yesterday afternoon the group had 3568 likes with most of the feedback positive.

The main administrator of the site, who asked to remain anonymous, said the page has no affiliation with Reading nor are they employees of the cinema but just concerned people who don't want the city to lose their cinema.

"We set up the Facebook page as we were very disheartened that the cinema was closing. As a parent of young children and a movie lover myself, it means now our experience would be lost again," the administrator said.

"We don't have any links to the cinema at all other then we use the cinema and will now be lost.

"I was very surprised at the growth of the page. We expected only maybe 100 but we were over 3000 within 12 hours and still growing."

The administrators said they hope the site can convince the owners of Riverdale Shopping Centre, Charter Hall, they need to do everything they can to retain Reading Cinemas as a tenant.

However their experience has been soured by a small number of people who have attacked them for what they are doing.

"Our admins have been threatened as to why should we be running a page," they said.

"[Detractors say] it would be good riddens to the cinema. We have been called all sorts of profanity which is sad but all in all, we cop it on the chin and move on. We like to hear the good stories and see the positive feed back from all instead."

Several people have commented on the page, expressing their sadness and disappointment that Dubbo could be left without a cinema, including Joy Hickman.

"We really need this cinema.. We travel half an hour just to go to the cinema.. Big companies need to listen to their communities," Ms Hickman said.
