THE cutting of a birthday cake was in order at yesterday's Seniors' Expo organised annually by the dynamic Dubbo Neighbourhood Centre (DNC).
DNC turned 40 this month and with community, corporate and council backing is helping more than 30,000 people a year.
The centre offers a broad range of services to disadvantaged people and families in Dubbo, including community transport and after-school care.
DNC's move to new premises in Gipps Street has expanded its reach and boosted its workload.
Monthly barbecues backed by Woolworths Orana Mall are among new initiatives attracting people to a centre where they might "see a brochure" worth taking home, says DNC manager Debbie Todkill.
A 10-year funding commitment from Dubbo City Council was acknowledged by the manager before she helped cut the cake.
"We have identified the needs and we're lucky with the funding that we can do what we do," she said.
DNC sought to "spoil" the hundreds of senior citizens who turned out to the expo in a pavilion of Dubbo Showground.
They enjoyed a barbecue lunch, perusing 45 stalls and listening to singers, including children from Dubbo South Public School.
