The Daily Liberal received this poem from Sally Hopkins after she read about the photo competition.
Sally said the poem was inspired from a story her dad told her about her sister Leanne when she was a little girl.
"I turned it into a poem so I hope you enjoy it and maybe it will even bring some of that beautiful rain!"
We had seen the sky change many times before,
Hope was building in our hearts at what we saw.
The storm clouds were gathering on the horizon,
Waiting for the rain, our hearts just grew tiresome.
The clouds would fill us with hope and expectation,
Would they finally bring the rain we need, oh the anticipation.
We appealed to the gods, someone had to understand,
We needed the rain for our crops otherwise we would have to leave the land.
We decided to go for a walk to finally feel some cool air,
A break from the heat of the day was something very rare.
My wife and my daughter walked along holding hands,
Walking barefoot they look at me and smile, they’re my greatest fans.
We give up on the rain coming and turn to head inside,
“Was that a drop of rain?” I say, my daughter runs and hides.
“It’s rain, it’s rain” I call out and my wife and I dance around,
My daughter is crying and screaming and covering her ears from the sound.
“Leanne what’s the matter” I say as I pick up my little gal,
Soaking wet she still cries while I dry her off with a towel.
“Darling it’s only rain” we say puzzled from her reaction at what she saw,
We’d been talking about rain for so long, we forgot she never seen it before.
Five years old she was, the drought had been very long,
We hoped that the sound of the rain would now become a regular song.
