The man behind the wheel went to a shopping centre carpark and a hospital carpark but he just could not shake the cops.
One motorist had her child on board when they encountered the vehicle that came "close enough to scare you".
Christine Bush from Cobar was coming out of a medical practice in Wheelers Lane with her two-year-old shortly after the chase started yesterday afternoon.
"The station wagon came flying down the road," she said.
"It was close enough to scare you. I pulled off to the side and then the two police cars went past.
"We're not kind of used to this... I want to go home to Cobar."
The maroon vehicle was detected in an industrial part of town on a day of intermittent rain.
Inspector Brad Johnston said police had first tried to stop the driver in Mountbatten Drive.
As officers were talking to the man he "took off".
Police pursued the vehicle for a while but terminated it when the driver headed into the Orana Mall carpark, the inspector said.
About five minutes later the car was seen on Wheelers Lane.
Police re-started the pursuit until it reached the Dubbo Hospital carpark, where the driver was arrested.
He was taken to the station and was yesterday afternoon assisting police with their inquiries.
