An estimated 250 people flocked to the South Dubbo Tavern, some lined up outside the door as Dubbo City Council was to begin its presentation.
The meeting came after the council last month put on display a proposal that would rezone a section of land in South Dubbo from low-density residential to general residential, which would allow multi-dwelling housing and other uses.
Dubbo mayor Mathew Dickerson said staff estimated about 250 people had attended.
He said the council would reschedule the meeting to a larger venue at a date to be advised in the next couple of weeks, giving residents adequate notice.
He welcomed advice of the large turn-out.
"I've been saying we want people to understand the proposal, be interested in it and make a submission," he said.
