Dark Mojo, a black dog out of Where's Pedro and Midnight Movie, jumped well from box one and despite being threatened by the Bruce Gentle-trained Campbell early on, kicked away to win by two lengths.
"He's got a lot of promise this pup and the further he goes the better he gets. We'll start him over 500 in his next start and then he might even go further to 600 or 700 but we don't know yet," Smith said after the race, already planning for the future.
"We're lucky that we got an inside run and all dogs go better with a bit of confidence but I think he's going to go a fair way."
Dark Mojo, starting the race at $3.90, jumped from the box in first but was neck-and-neck with Campbell ($4.60) down the back straight before kicking away as they hit the bend to win in 23.18s
Campbell finished second while Rain Maker ($3.10) finished third for trainer and owner Peter Carr.
"I think he'll go alright over the 500," Smith said of Dark Mojo.
"But we just had to get the maiden out of the road and hopefully we can move on to bigger and better things."
Earlier in the afternoon the Barbara Judd-trained Tassie Wayne picked up it's first win in the Happy New Year Dubbo Maiden over 318m.
Tassie Wayne, a brindle dog out of Bit Chili and Abella's Casey, broke out at a rapid speed alongside Sannette Eve but he pushed from the field early to lead by three lengths by the time they went down the back straight.
Miss Watson ($25.20) was in hot pursuit but Tassie Wayne ($2.00 fav.) had far too much speed as he won by four lengths for his veteran trainers while Sannette Eve was a further seven-and-three-quarter-lengths behind Miss Watson in third.
"He went alright but we're getting too old to be out all the time with them," laughed Sam Carr, wife of Barbara.
"It was good, I'm pleased with him and all our efforts have been worthwhile."
