The Victoria Park precinct is a central leisure spot for Dubbo residents. The skate park was sprayed with paint and there were obscene words and pictures. The daycare centre had graffiti on the fence, building, shed, windows, trees and shrubs.
The clean-up will cost the Dubbo City Council about $10,000. That is on top of $24,700 spent fixing acts of vandalism from July to September. Last year the annual bill was $70,000.
It is money that could be used to improve existing leisure spots and facilities or contributing to new ones - another water park, extending the skate park or BMX track for the children.
Instead, it is wasted tidying up the mess created by mindless, anti-social misfits.
They probably think it is an act of bravado... challenging authority by striking at popular public facilities. They are cowards.
They probably think that if caught, they would get off with a slap on the wrist. If caught, they should get the most severe penalties available and should be made to repay every cent for the clean-up.
There is a reward of $2500 for anyone providing information leading to the conviction of anyone committing wilful damage to council property. Someone should do the city a great favour and turn these vandals in.
