But its members are not fazed about taking a whack at the statistic and saving lives.
In fact, they are eager to share information and encourage Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people rattled by a diagnosis dreaded by all.
Group facilitator and breast cancer survivor Robin Payne got to the point quickly at its fourth monthly meeting at Holy Trinity Church Hall yesterday morning.
"They all think that cancer is a sentence and they're going to die," she said.
"But it is not a sentence."
Nevertheless, there were barriers to beating cancer for Aboriginal people, the facilitator reported.
Indigenous cancer sufferers would benefit from more support, information and direction from health professionals after diagnosis, she said.
The group, backed by an Aboriginal health worker and Cancer Council NSW, currently has 10 members who are sharing their experiences.
Peter Carpenter, fighting liver and bowel cancer, said: "You get to know other people and try to help them because you've been through it."
"If you try to battle this on your own, you've got no hope."
Yesterday the members were presented with a painting by Aboriginal artist Brooke Sullivan that touched their hearts.
"This is going to be our symbol...we'll hang it up when we have an official place," Mrs Payne said.
The painting, while telling a story of survival, also acknowledges those lost to cancer.
It is called Spiritual Support and features the pink ribbon associated with breast cancer.
Cancer Council NSW and the Aboriginal Health and Medical Research Council are working together in a bid to establish more Aboriginal cancer support groups in the state.
A series of workshops has begun to gather information in the formulating of an action plan that will help "close the gap".
