The 90-minute docudrama Malcolm Naden: Australia’s Most Hunted encapsulates the entire story of Malcolm Naden, from his conviction at Dubbo through to the actual footage of his main confessions captured after he was arrested in March last year, 2466 days - or just short of seven years - later.
Presented by The Force: Behind the Line, the documentary shows extraordinary NSW Police vision from this seven-year manhunt, actual crime scene pictures, the untold story behind the manhunt and Naden’s chilling confessions.
In an effort to keep the documentary as authentic and real as possible, the crew also filmed at Dubbo, Barrington Tops, Nowendoc and Ken’s Hut, where Naden was finally found by detectives.
The documentary was created by the Seven Network and will be aired on Channel 7 nationally on September 11, at 8.30pm.
Director Brad Cone, who has many relatives living in the Upper Hunter, said this was the first time Naden’s complete story had been told from start to finish.
“The documentary provides the inside story from the police perspective, including Strike Force Durkin, as well as the stories of the mothers and mother-in-law of the victims Lateesha Nolan and Kristy Scholes and other major players,” he said.
“One of the most exclusive aspects of the story is the real footage from the main confessions that are captured.
“We have tried to keep the story as real and authentic as possible, which is why we filmed at Stewarts Brook and the other locations where Naden was actually traced.”
Major elements of the story include the raid on Taronga Western Plains Zoo and several hideouts from across Australia, from sightings at Broome in Western Australia right through to Naden dressed as a woman in inner-city Redfern.
The role of Malcolm Naden is played by Newcastle man Dominic Dates, in his first major feature documentary role.
