They are working on the $430,000 first stage of an amenities block at Victoria Park's ovals to replace an ageing facility and, as they do so, hoping it opens up new possibilities.

The building rapidly taking shape thanks to many skilled hands may just lure big carnivals and their hundreds of participants to Dubbo.

Last year Dubbo missed out on a tournament to Mudgee's impressive Glen Willow Regional Sporting Complex, Dubbo Junior Roos Rugby Union president Steven Gower recalled during a recent visit to the construction site.

He looked forward to applying for country championships events at the completion of the amenities block near both No. 2 and No. 3 ovals.

"We'll have facilities to accommodate multiple teams on any given day," Mr Gower said.

Stage one, estimated to cost $430,000, included construction of change rooms, canteen, public toilets, storage areas and a viewing platform.

The president welcomed the "outstanding" addition to what he said were the most used grounds at Dubbo.

"Once done they'll be second to none in the central west rugby zone," Mr Gower said.

The junior rugby union club and the Dubbo District Cricket Association took the project from planning to action in February with a call-out to tradies for in-kind support.

Together the clubs had already raised $200,000 for the first stage of works, including $35,000 from the NSW Department of Sport and Recreation, $60,000 from the Sports Council, $85,000 from Dubbo City Council and $20,000 in contributions from the community, local business and the clubs' members.

The community did not disappoint the clubs, pledging their support prior to the start of works scheduled for April.

A lot of Dubbo tradies donated time and equipment for the concrete slab pour and subsequent works and Mr Gower said the combined effort would allow the completed project to serve the community for years to come.

"All the school kids at Dubbo will use this," he said.
