Reading Cinemas Dubbo manager Zara Jom believed The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey would beat its competition on Boxing Day.
"If it's like the first three (Lord of the Rings films)... the second and third films were phenomenal here," she said.
Ms Jom recalled instances from those films of people travelling to Dubbo only to miss out on seats and burst into tears.
"One woman once offered $200 for a seat and then went to sit on the floor... we'll have to see if it gets as big with the Hobbit films," Ms Jom said.
For those not so compelled to follow the adventures of Middle Earth, musical Les Miserables, Disney's Wreck-It Ralph and comedy Parental Guidance are the other offerings.
2012 was another big year for Reading Cinemas, Ms Jom labelling Ted, The Avengers and Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted as Dubbo's biggest films - until now.
"I think it's going to be The Hobbit - it's still 2012!" she said.
Other films to keep kids and parents occupied for the remainder of the holidays will include Life of Pi on New Year's Day, Tom Cruise in new franchise hope Jack Reacher on January 3 and Knocked Up spin-off This is 40.
