THUNDER DOWN UNDER: Sub-continent cricketers to take on Aussie Bolts

INTERNATIONAL cricket comes to Dubbo in a big way on Sunday when two teams go head-to-head in a Twenty20 big bash from 12.30pm at No.2 Oval.

This game will be a first for Dubbo featuring the Tropical Thunders of sub-continent players and Aussie Bolts.

RSL-Colts all-rounder Brad Murahari is one of the people behind organising the game and members of the public are encouraged to come along.

"The face of Dubbo cricket is very different to what it was with a number of clubs fielding players from different nationalities," Murahi said.

"That is very much the case at my club RSL-Colts.

"We have four teams and other clubs [have] similar numbers and now and then we are looking for players and calling on others to fill in.

"With the multicultural community we have there are a number of players willing to give it a go and now we see a big number of Indian players particularly and others from Pakistan, Fiji and Sri Lanka putting on the pads each week.

“We at Colts decided that we wanted to acknowledge the contribution made by these players and their families into our Dubbo community. So why not have a game of cricket?

“That was the start. Then it grew into something more with a social night at Paramount Tennis Club on Saturday night adding to the festivities.”

Murahari’s bid to attract players was made easier when former UK graphic designer Lijo came up with the poster. Game on.

While Murahari has been working the telephone getting this squad of players together, Aussie Bolts skipper Wayne Cole has been doing likewise.

Interest in the game and the social evening is growing by the day and Murahari expects a big turnout.

“Cricket aside, Saturday night should really be something with lots of food, a curry competition and lots of loud Bollywood music and of course a few speeches,” Murahari said.

“The other Dubbo clubs have responded with enthusiasm for the night and will have people there but we’d like anyone interested to contact myself or Wayne Cole so that we can get the catering right.

“The cost is $20 per person and it should be a lot of fun with a lot of our friends, cricket teammates and others.”

Those interested in going along are asked to contact Brad Murahari on 0468 344 288 or Wayne Cole at RSL-Colts cricket.
