A field of 31 Dubbo RSL Ducks members were at the swimming pool for the events with Henderson’s Menswear the proud January sponsors.
Twohill was in fine form as he clocked .09 from his handicap to win the 25m freestyle closest to handicap by a clear margin over Greg Salmon (0.49) and Ron Everett (0.72). Other finalists were Brian Walsh 0.85 and Matt McDonagh 0.97.
Earlier he had won his heat and semi-final in convincing fashion and as a result was at unbackable odds in the final.
As soon they hit the water it was obvious he was on the job and the result was never in doubt.
The most determined swimmer on the morning was undoubtedly Roger Mackay who combined with Paul Sinclair to win the final of the backstroke and freestyle relay over 25 metres.
They won their heat nicely and carried that form into the final but needed some luck in the big one when Louise Taylor and Jeff Smith were telling all those who cared that they were the winners.
Wrong. The handicapper (as he always does) has the the final say and the only word he uttered was ‘broke.’
Kidding Sinclair and Mackay weren’t pleased and their smiles told the story. In second place was the combination of David Sparkes and Matt McDonagh.
The third final conducted was the 50m freestyle when Norm Bahr stepped up to the mark and registered just 0.12 from his handicap to win the prize in front of Margaret Ross (0.60) and Ron Everett (1.09). Then came Roger Mackay at 3.11 and Brian Walsh back at 7.25.
A steward’s inquiry into the performances of Mackay and Walsh revealed no obvious reason for their ‘miscalculations’ but they have been put on notice that their future performances will be watched with interest.
As you can see in our photograph that Walsh had nothing to hide .... or did he?
Interesting to note also the performances of John Wherritt on Sunday. He stepped out with a fine swim to win his heat of the 25m freestyle as he goes head-on towards another milestone in his time with the Ducks.
You will remember just recently he chalked up 1000 swims for the club - a great effort and one that he should be proud of. Wherritt was one of the lucky number winners, along with John McLean, Ron Soden and Dick Smith, while we welcomed two new members Jessie Yeomans and Harley Cooper.
Happy birthday wishes to Sybille and John Jobson, Allan Morris (88), Chelsea Ross (12) and Kim Bennett - a lady we are missing.
The pointscore from December saw Greg Salmon on 33 at the top of the stack, in front of Tony Wall and Brian Walsh (30) and Judy Walsh (29).
For your diary, we have the RSL Western Districts Carnival at Wellington Sunday, February 13; and the Australia AIF National Carnival at Southport, Queensland on March 19. Dubbo will be host in 2012.
Finally, all the Movember moustaches are gone. A fine effort from all those who participated.
