Pandemonium broke out at the Bathurst hockey complex yesterday when the girls’ side delivered the final rites by 1-0 to kill off any hopes Dubbo had of retaining the trophy they have enjoyed for the past three years.
The three-school contest between Dubbo, Bathurst and Orange high schools was first won by Dubbo in 1923.
Since then Orange has been the most successful team with 40 victories - Dubbo is next on 23 and Bathurst now on 22.
Dubbo College sports organiser Craig May said Bathurst’s win was most deserved.
“Today’s win for Bathurst will be great for the Astley Cup,” he said.
“They have showed here today they are worthy winners and they deserved to win it.
“It was a wonderful scene here with many, many past teachers, parents and students at the hockey complex to see the win finally come through.

“Our Dubbo students knew they would be in for a tough tussle this week and Bathurst certainly lived up to the reckoning.”
The winning margin at the end was 100 points with Bathurst taking out the hockey 1-0, girls’ soccer 3-1 and boys’ soccer 2-1 with Dubbo ahead marginally in the athletics.
On day one Dubbo won tennis 11 sets to 5 and basketball 64-60 while the netball was drawn 30-all and Bathurst surprised in the rugby league winning 46-24.
Dubbo led by a small margin of 10 points at that stage but their slight win in athletics was marginal before Bathurst dominated for the rest of the day.
Dubbo came up with some good performances in athletics with Charly Runciman winning the 100 metres in 11.4s and the shot put with a throw of 11.3m while Tiffany Stanley won the 100m girls event in 13.8s and Corey Cox won a countback decision in the high jump.
Further success for Dubbo came in the shot put through Tierra Hausia; the long jump by Tiffany Stanley and high jump when Rachel Rogers jumped 1.42m to win on a countback. The relays were shared with Dubbo first in the boys and Bathurst the girls.
Bathurst’s two soccer sides were on the ball with the girls up 2-0 early while all the goals in the boys’ game were scored in the second half.
Sweeper Andrew Tarry and Remy Hemberg in the midfield had top games for Dubbo while Colby Pellow was prominent. Robert Calder was the goal-scorer.
In the girls’ match Dubbo goalkeeper Katie Lee Delaney was great in goal and kept the Bathurst scoring to a minimum while Katie Pakai-Kelly controlled the mid-field and late replacement Kim Gordon was a standout performer.
The last sport played was girls’ hockey with Dubbo needing to win 4-0 but that didn’t happen.
Bathurst won 1-0 despite a fantastic game from Lisa Mould.
