Having nominated the nine teams for 2005, the club is looking forward to continuing its success from 2004 when it took home the men's premiership and the club championship.
In the juniors this week the under-11 Sloggers defeated West
2-1. This team is very inexperienced with many picking up a hockey stick for the first time, but they are passing well among each other with great games played by Mariah Tunoho and Carissa Lewis. Interesting to note that Stuart Mackenzie played in the field for the first time this week instead of goalkeeper and was able to put the ball in the net three times.
The Slammers are quickly developing into a great team and had an outstanding win against EDH (last year's premiers) by seven goals to nil. The coaching staff said that Braden Fordham and Brianna Turrell had great games.
In the under-15 girls, City created some excellent attack down the left side of EDH with Emily Ainsworth and Jenni Peadon passing and receiving the ball at will to defeat the defence. Julie Martin who provided excellent distribution skills following the great defensive work by Laura Hogan helped them. With this great display of teamwork City was able to defeat EDH three goals to one.
The under-15 boys were defeated by Wests five goals to one. Tyler Stewart, Jake Lindsay and Mitchell Webster had great games and as they begin to work as a team instead of individuals they will improve. There is plenty of potential in this team.
Last year's premiers in the men's competition, City Blue, have started the season well with three wins against their club-mates City Red, The Star and Coops Rocs. This side has a number of changes from last year and are starting to develop the partnerships needed to defend their crown. The structure in attack has been impressive with many good goal-scoring opportunities created through Wayne Garroway and the former goalkeeper, now forward, Carle Jones.
When the team finds a fullback partner for Paul Lebroque, they will look very settled. It is only early days and the team is yet to play the stronger opposition, which will provide some very tough competition.
City Red has a mixture of the evergreen senior players and stalwarts of the club, plus the up and coming juniors. While this team is yet to register a win, there has been plenty of promising play created by the juniors Tyler Stewart, Jarat Johnstone and Kurt Ward. These players will gain valuable experience from the likes of Craig Johnstone, Guy Burton and on his return from injury, Neville Stewart. As this side develops their own playing style, they will be competitive against many teams in this competition.
The A grade women's team is yet to register a loss after the first round has been completed. After registering a win against a depleted United, where the team played well across the field, they then scored a come-from-behind draw with Waratahs with great games had by Kate Corcoran and Alisa Seton. They were unlucky to only get a draw against Wests, with the equaliser by Wests being scored from a penalty corner after full-time. Carman Evans and the goalkeeper Jo Hornby played excellent games. The second round starts this week and sides will not be taking City so easily.
The B grade women's team is in a similar position to the City Red men's team with many juniors making the initial start in the senior competition. Again they are yet to register a win for the year but are showing many positive improvements.
This team is being ably lead by Chris Ward, Margie Mackenzie and Belinda Stewart and will continue to develop with positive feedback each game. The team has been unlucky and have run up against the stronger sides in the grade and will give many teams a run for their money.
