Orana Vets Cycle Club started the summer season of short-course races on the Old Dubbo Road on Thurdsday.

Darrell Wheeler and Craig May were right on the speed but were among the also rans on adjusted times.
It was pleasing to see 20 riders for the first race, which was conducted in ideal weather conditions.
There were several new riders having their first outing with the club, as well as five women lining up for the start. Riders started at 30 seconds intervals with placings being decided by a secret handicap.
After adjusted times, Eagle Boys Pizza vouchers were taken home by Gerard Cushan, Amber Carter and Raphael Chapman. These members are going from strength to strength and seem to improve every time they face the starter.
Chapman and Carter are coming into great form as they prepare for the Australian Veterans Cycling Championships in Canberra next weekend.
Wheeler and May really smoked the course finishing in 21.32 and 21.54 for the 14 kilometres which equates to over 39km/h for Wheeler and 38.4km/h for May.
Placings for all competitors and actual times were: Gerard Cushan 24.31, Amber Carter 26.11, Raphael Chapman 24.30, Lincoln McBroom 25.02, Vic Slavensky 27.20, Catriona Jennings 29.14, Craig May 21.54, Ali Wilton 27.56, Kathy Furney 28.02, Darrell Wheeler 21.32, Phil Harrex 23.33, Liz Meredith 26.56, Evan Elliott 24.51, Mick Cooper 23.11, Jeff Sargent 24.40, Mick Harvey 26.25, Stephen Hoynes 27.33, Grahame Chapman 27.44, Tim Whitton 28.50, Ray Wheeler 22.51.
This Thursday’s race will be over the longer 19km course, starting at 6pm sharp from near the Lazy River Estate on the Old Dubbo Road.
The club will continue to hold track training at No.1 Oval on a Wednesday night during the summer months.

Results are also posted at Wheelers Cycle Shop in Bultje Street. Anyone interested in joining Orana Vets can sign up from October 1, giving three months of racing this year, in addition to next year’s membership.
The club has members travelling to Canberra for the Australian Veterans Cycling Championships next weekend.
