Souths stalwart John Colwell continues to draw on his bag of tricks as he once again proved he is the man to steer Souths to Whitney Cup success, smashing 147 runs to contribute to his side’s whopping first innings total of 352 runs on the first day of Souths two-day clash with Macquarie.

Souths won the toss and reshuffled their batting line up, with Colwell and Aaron Etcell (44) lowered down the order
It worked a treat in conjunction with a move that saw Jarrod Simpson (60) elevated to open Souths campaign with captain Tom Quilter (24).
Simpson batted through six partnerships with the best being an impressive 178 runs with Colwell.
As the competition’s second highest run scorer, behind Colts Wes Giddings, Colwell was more than just a slight headache for Macquarie with much relief felt when he was finally dismissed with a Mark Riechelt ball caught by Jason Green.
Simpson stayed in there for another nine overs but was eventually caught and bowled by Macquarie captain Ricky Medway.
With Etcell also difficult to remove, Macquarie were unable to dismiss Souths within the 75 overs and will now be forced to chase a whopping 352 runs.
Ricky Medway (5-72) led the way with both his bowling and fielding, to stop short the efforts of Simpson, Adam Carr (5), Tim Morris (0), Fred Walford (1) and Joe Williams (17).
Reichelt (2-77) also took some handy wickets and fielded well with key wickets in Colwell and Quilter.
Still, Souths performance puts them in good stead to hold onto their undefeated start to the season as Macquarie didn’t get the chance to bat and will certainly need some stamina to hunt down what the current competiton leaders produced on Saturday.
